All the feelings we have are essential
Our feelings, both physical and emotional are as essential as the air we breathe.
A woman once said when her daughter was young, she fell off her pony and hurt her arm. She took her to see a doctor who promptly told her to make sure the child didn’t move or use her arm until it healed, and while she slept, she was to make sure the arm was protected and held in one place. He said not to allow her to do the same activity and to remember to give her medication for the pain. She said one night, her daughter fell asleep before she was able to give her painkillers and she noticed that while she slept, she naturally protected the arm herself. The observation helped her appreciate the natural way the pain informed and protected her when she moved her injured arm.
We spend so much time and money trying to get rid of any discomfort or pain we feel whether it’s physical, psychological or emotional, unaware of how much our feelings inform, nurture, serve and protect us. We tend to believe we shouldn’t be feeling the way we do instead of questioning why we feel the way we do. There is always a reason and when we know and understand the real reason, our feelings change and we act in a way that is naturally healthy.
Women naturally experience pain when giving birth so a child can safely enter the world. We feel pain if we break a bone to immobilise us so it can heal; without the pain, we’d continue to move around and it wouldn’t heal. We feel pain when we touch something hot to make us remove our hand so we aren’t burned. We feel fear when we are in a dangerous situation so we remove ourselves from the danger. There was a time when many people were fearful of electricity and for good reason; electricity used the wrong way can kill. However, once we all understood how electricity worked and how to relate to it safely, we were no longer fearful.
Denying, ignoring or suppressing our feelings and emotions is denying our natural knowledge and protection. Continuing to do so ultimately destroys the human soul.
